THE MOVE IS COMPLETE!

Well... it's been a good run but my art has moved to a new home! If anyone finds this old relic please click on the picture link and follow the trail of breadcrumbs to the new place. It was a blast here and I'm hoping for new enjoyable experiences in the future.

We're moving

Well this has been a fun ride. Unfortunately, casting my net out here seems to have been rather fruitless. I've been getting better traction on other web platforms and soon I'll have my own personal website. When that's finished I'll post one more time here with the link and then we'll let this part of my past go.

T-shirts update

Hey guys. I've been working on a few things. Chief among them some T-shirt designs. I'm trying to break into the shirt a day T-shirt site market and it's been tough. I've done a few rejected designs but I'm only going to bother posting the 3 most recent as I feel they're the strongest so far. I'll keep working on these and perhaps, if it becomes more popular, I'll do an update post about this stuff one day.

A couple of these are still pending on T-shirt sites so we'll see where things go from here. I'll keep you posted of developments.

Should any of these interest you, you can purchase them here:

The Great Clock Tower

It's getting a tad dusty up here. Let me clear some cob webs.

*Dusts frantically*

With that out of the way I'm working on several things at once and have had a few bits of good luck the last few days. Which is good because I've also been dealing with another crippling bout of self loathing for my work. The good news is that it keeps me plugging away and trying. The bad news is that it's REALLY hard to do that sometimes when I compare my work to all the amazing people I see.

I got accepted to a T-shirt design critique group on Facebook and that's already helped with a few things I plan on doing in the next couple of weeks. I got asked to come in and pick up an application for a professional art job and am waiting to see if I get called in for an interview which is exciting and nerve wracking in equal measure.

For now I'd like to share an image I had to hold off on releasing. It was a commission for a friend's birthday and now I can actually post it (technically it's been a few days since I could but I'm putting it here now.

I used a slightly different process with this one. Closer to the monster image I did a while back than my usual black and white under painting because I had a good idea of the colors going into it. Even then I had to get some critiques because I kept missing stuff like lighting on the rocks and the way the water would flow. My friend loved her piece though and I love that this piece feels like an improvement (especially as I get less and less happy with my past work.

Dragon Charmer

Hello again folks. It's a new year but work goes on as always. Some personal stuff got in the way of working for awhile at the tail end of last year, mostly a minor bout of depression that makes it really hard to work on anything. Regardless what we have here is a concept I've played with before and never  managed to my satisfaction. I love the idea of a human with multiple dragon pets (I blame this tendency for my fascination with the How to Train Your Dragon movie). I also wanted something with multiple characters/figures in the image. That lead to this most recent attempt. I learned a lot from this guy but I'm honestly unsure as to how to feel about it.

In other news I've got a couple of updates.

I've made a facebook page for myself as another promotion tool. If anyone is looking at this they can find it here: Aaron Radney: Illustration and Design. It's also acting as a sort of hub where one can find links to all the places where you can find my work and get other fun and witty information. Check it out!

Also, I'm still working on T-shirt stuff though the going there is slow. You won't see any of that here but it IS on the facebook page linked above.

I've got a couple of images I'm really excited about but can't show yet for one reason or another. Mostly because the person who requested them hasn't come through yet to pick it up and I want them to see the image first. Once they accept the images, I'll make them available. Talk to you all soon.

Monster Contest

So recently, I've entered 2 contests. One is the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future contest. I have to wait a bit to see how that goes but I got my entires sent off before the deadline. We'll see how that goes.

I also entered a monster contest at Redbubble.com, which is a site where you can buy artist's work on various items like ipod cases, t-shirts etc. This was the image I submitted to the contest.

I had a lot of fun and learned a lot from doing this one. I had to start it over because the original composition and design were pretty bad and thus only had 3 days to complete it. That's a new record for me.

Sadly, this image did not make it to the finals of the contest to be voted on for the big prize but I can't be mad at him. He got a lot of attention for me being very new to the online store and I hope to get more in the future.

Dream Diver

Hello again. This has been a good and busy couple of days for me. I finished two projects in short order and I think both turned out well enough. Also, they were in mediums I don't work with as much as I used to which was a lot of fun.

I cannot remember the last piece I did that was simple pencil and ink on paper. I really can't. I've been painting and working digitally for so long that I just hadn't done it. The sci-fi contest I'm planning on entering seemed like a good excuse. If the tech looks a bit familiar it's because this is another Dream Walker like this fellow:

Admittedly, this guy is slightly more advanced in his tech. I felt like trying to really push the science fiction feel a bit more and there we go.

I was originally content to leave this alone at just pencils. It would have been fine I think. But, alas I heard the siren song of the Digital Devil and so this is what the finished version looks like.

I was much looser in some ways with this project. I'm not sure why or if the results are work going for again but it doesn't matter, it felt great to capture some of the joy of working again and not having to be quite as serious as I normally am.
