Developments and Environments

Well hello again folks. So right now it's snowing pretty heavily in my current locale and I've got time off with nowhere I need to be. That means I get to focus on what I do: making pictures YAY!

So, today I started a tumblr today. Since nobody
really seems to comment here I thought perhaps my audience could be expanded through a Tumblr.

Anyway, I thought I'd share these piece here and on the tumblr. They're a bit older but they're still some fun images. This is especially true because I haven't done a ton of landscapes or environments.
This first one is the most recent and actually served as the inspiration to create a piece that actually showed up on here earlier. Asimov's Realm. That's right... this was done first but ended up on here later. As a very wise madman once said, "Time is not a strict linear series of cause and effect."

These two are significantly earlier and they were early experiments in watercolor and digital. They were so much fun to do they're pretty much the reason I keep working that way.

Mermaid Completed

Well at long last I got the chance to return to my mythical creature project and I feel like it was worth the wait because this turned out about as well as I'd hoped. Learned a lot and got another piece for my portfolio. Mission accomplished.

Works in Progress

I had some time before I go out tonight so I thought I'd share a couple of things that are in the works and will be completed soon.

The first is one I showed a swatch of earlier.

Here we have three mermaids in all their glory. I'm pretty happy with how this one is developing. Color is coming on this one soon. I think it could be a portfolio piece. Frankly, if I botch the color I'll just clean the black and white up nice and pretty and put it in anyway.

You know, considering how much work it is for me I sure love drawing women. This lady is actually from a story I've worked on off and on for some time. I'm thinking I might use this as a card or promotional material at some point but for now she's an excuse to try a bunch of new techniques out. Color's coming on her too eventually but I need to do a lot more work and finish a couple portfolio pieces first. Note: She's actually part elf. Forgot to push the ears a bit. Oh well. I'll fix it later.

New Mermaid image Work in Progress

Okay so I've got a lot going on right now. Lots of simple illustrations for some friends with what they've got going on and, as usual the terrible day jobs at the moment. More than that though are several illustrations planned since I've learned a bunch of new tricks I'm looking forward to playing with.

In the meantime, an update. I recently posted a piece in an art order contest. I completed the piece on deadline and the critique from the judges mostly focused on the inclusion of text which I probably shouldn't have done. That was really their crit actually. Let the publisher and the designer worry about that part. Anyway, noted and filed. As for my personal take on the illustration I'm okay with it but not happy with it. Certainly not happy enough for it to be in the portfolio text or no text which was the other reason for doing the contest aside from just getting my name out into the world. Still, happier than I can tell you that I did the contest and I plan on entering more when and where I can.

The other thing this contest did though was spark some serious creativity on my part. A lot of new ideas got churning. I'm back to my 52 mythical creatures project and I'm working on the mermaid right now since the contest was Nymph focused.

Here's a work in progress shot of my little aquatic lovely.

Just a small section of her for now but the full image is coming and it's coming along nicely enough that if I manage to not botch it last minute like I have with a couple of other pieces this one's going in the portfolio. Then I'll probably be focusing on pure humans for a while. Gotta get more of those in regardless.
